Last week, our very own Dr. Steurer had the incredible opportunity to assist the Phoenix Zoo’s veterinary team in performing a rare surgical procedure on Bornean Orangutan, Michael.
Michael was diagnosed with apocrine carcinoma near his right armpit. This is a very rare type of cancer in people and can be locally invasive and aggressive in nature. This is the first time it has ever been seen in an orangutan. Dr. Steurer helped in surgically resecting the area of the tumor and tracer dye was injected to help identify sentinel lymph nodes in the area, which were also removed for evaluation of possible metastasis.
We’re honored to have been part of such a meaningful collaboration in helping this amazing animal.
